Grigori Perelman, the reclusive Russian mathematician who discovered a way to solve a mathematical problem known as the Poincaré conjecture but refused to accept a Fields Medal for his work, has been named the recipient of another honor, the first of the $1-million Millennium Prizes to be awarded by the Clay Mathematics Institute.

The institute has been in touch with Mr. Perelman, its president, James Carlson, told The New York Times, but it was unclear whether the mathematician would accept the prize. "He will let me know in due time," Mr. Carlson said.
